Welcome to our serial Golf lessons that I have been releasing since the start of the year.
We have talked about the historical development of the game, the tools used and the courses on which the game is being played.
Today we shall go a bit deeper by focusing on skills used by Golfers to get maximum results for each shot played, and we will focus on how to spin the Golf ball backwards. The act/art of spinning is a display of maximum control of the Golf ball, making it do exactly what the Golfer intended it to do. This is actually a skill that is used when the ball is to be placed very close to the pin (cup) for easy putting, thereby reducing strokes and having good score. A good spin on the Golf ball can greatly boost a Golfer’s chances of scoring a par rather than a boogy on a given hole.
To further explain how to spin a Golf ball, I will enumerate the process of hitting the Golf ball appropriately to achieve a spin.
To spin a golf ball, you need to create backspin on the ball as it is in flight. This backspin creates a lift force on the ball, which keeps it in the air for a longer period and helps it stop more quickly when it hits the ground. Here are some listed tips on how to spin a golf ball:
- Use a clean ball: A clean golf ball will create more friction with the clubface, which will help generate spin. (Note that it is advisable that your Golf ball is sparkling clean at all times. This will enhance ‘club – ball’ contact and generate proper control.)
- Use a wedge: Wedges are designed to create spin. Use a wedge with a high loft angle, such as a sand wedge, pitching wedge or lob wedge while approaching the green. (make sure that the surface of the club is clean, to enhance proper Golf ball control.)
- Hit down on the ball: To create backspin, you need to hit down on the ball. Make sure your club head is descending as it strikes the ball, like you are chopping through the grass, to create a divot on the course.
- Open the clubface: To create more loft and spin, open the clubface slightly at address.
- Accelerate through the ball: The speed of the clubhead at impact is a key factor in creating spin. Make sure to accelerate through the ball and maintain your wrist angle through impact.
- Brush the grass: After you hit the ball, the clubhead should brush the grass in front of the ball. This will help create more spin on the ball.
Creating spin on a golf ball takes practice and patience. Keep working on these tips, and you’ll soon be able to control your ball spin like a pro.
Remember, long drives are for show, chipping and putting are for dough. Those two areas are what basically reduce you scores and you need to master them.
